Your Building’s Heat Pumps Are Nearing the End of Their Lifespan

Many of the original heat pump systems in this building are now about 18 years old. That’s well past the point where most condo-style units start to lose heating and cooling performance. Even if your original system still runs, it may be using more electricity, struggling in extreme temperatures, or getting louder than it used to.

This page gives you a quick summary of the equipment that was installed during construction and what owners should know today.

What Was Installed When the Building Was Built

Most units in this building were equipped with Skymark International packaged heat pump systems. These are self-contained, through-the-wall style units designed for condo applications.

Skymark International was a Canadian manufacturer that specialized in this type of equipment. In the late 2000s, the company was acquired by Johnson Controls. After that acquisition, production of many original Skymark and SkyPak units slowed down and eventually stopped. As a result, the equipment in buildings from this era is now considered obsolete, and many models do not have readily available replacement parts.

This doesn’t mean you need to replace your system immediately, but it does mean repairs can be difficult, costly, or simply not possible. Once a major component fails, replacement is often the only viable option.

How Long These Systems Typically Last

A packaged condo heat pump in the Okanagan will usually run for 12 to 17 years. After that, compressors, fan motors, and control boards become more prone to failure. Efficiency also drops with age, and older refrigerants and components can’t always be sourced.

Typical signs of a system reaching end of life include:

  • Noisy operation
  • Inconsistent temperatures
  • Long run times
  • Reduced cooling in the summer
  • Slower recovery in cold weather

A system may still run, but be close to a breakdown.

Why We’ve Been Working in Your Building

Over the past while, we’ve been helping owners in the building replace their aging Skymark units with modern alternative systems. New systems are quieter, more efficient, and come with warranties for peace of mind.

Because we’ve been on-site for multiple jobs here, we’ve become familiar with the building layout, electrical service, and the original equipment used. That makes assessments and replacements much more straightforward.

Complimentary In-suite Assessment

If you’d like us to look at your current system, we offer a quick in-suite checkup. No pressure and no obligation. We review the age, wear, performance, and replacement options so you know what to expect before something breaks.

Replacing an aging heat pump is a real investment in your home. For many owners, the upfront investment is what holds them back, so we’ve arranged funding options that make it easy to move forward without a big outlay. You can get into a new, warrantied system with little to no money down and a monthly investment that stays predictable and manageable. It lets you upgrade on your terms while protecting your comfort and giving you a long runway before any major equipment issues show up.
